About this place

The Alpine Trail #225 begins near the Alpine Guard Station on the Alpine Forest Access Road, FSR #686 and ends at Forest Service Road #858 on the Ouray Ranger District. Originally the Alpine Trail connected the Alpine Guard Station to the Jackson Guard Station. This trail is the main access to the High Mesa and Big Park which both have excellent elk habitat. It travels through dense Engelmann spruce and sub alpine fir forests. From Lake City, travel north on Gunnison Highway 149 for 10 miles to the intersection with FSR #868. Turn left and follow the signs to the Big Blue Campground. The trail begins on a curve approximately half a mile north of the campground.
