The Palmetto Trail now extends to the Intracoastal Waterway. In 2003, a seven-mile trail was opened, extending the trail from the Buck Hall Recreation Area in McClellanville to the Swamp Fox Trailhead on Highway 17. The Awendaw Passage of the Palmetto Trail provides both hikers and bike riders with a gateway to the maritime forests and pine ridges of the low country as well as linking to 47 miles of the Swamp Fox Passage which traverses the entire forest. Both these passages are part of the statewide Palmetto Trail and its 425 miles of trail. This trail can be accessed from either the Buck Hall Recreation Area, the Awendaw Canoe Launch Trailhead or the Swamp Fox Trailhead. A fee is charged. From Charleston, South Carolina, take U.S. Highway 17 north ( 32.0 mi.) to Buck Hall Landing Road (Forest Road 242 /1099). Turn right into the recreation area. From Georgetown, South Carolina, take U.S. Highway 17 South/South Fraser Street (29.0 mi.) to Buck Hall Landing Road (Forest Road 242 /1099). Turn left into the recreation area.
