The South Skookum Trailhead is located next to the boat ramp area at South Skookum Lake Campground. This non-motorized trail is a 1.3 mile long loop and also includes a 0.3 mile spur trail. This popular trail follows the west and south shoreline of the lake and offers scenic views of the lake. For hikers interested in wildlife, deer and moose can frequently be spotted along the edge of the lake. Other small forest animals and birds can also be observed along the trail. Five benches, which were installed by a local boy scout troop are scattered along the trail and offer visitors an opportunity to stop and enjoy the scenery. A fee is charged. From Newport, WA: Follow State Highway 20 north for 15 miles to the town of Usk. Cross the bridge over the Pend Oreille River on the east edge of town and follow the Kings Lake Road (County Road 3389) 8 miles to the junction of Forest Road 5032350 (Kings Mountain). Follow Kings Mountain for 0.5 mile to the campground entrance. The trailhead is located in the campground near the boat ramp.
