About this place
This is a gentler, scenic alternative to the more popular Northwest Rigde Route. From 4x4 parking, follow road north (right) for 300 yards to a gate. The route climbs north then northwest for 1.0 mile into a valley. Hike north across the valley and climb to La Plata's southwest ridge via a steep slope. Continue northeast for 1.0 mile to summit. From Leadville, travel south on US Hwy. 24 19 miles to Chaffee County 390 (dirt.) Follow 390 for 11.8 miles to Winfield. Go right onto FR 360.A, 0.6 miles to an open area on the left to park. With high clearance 4x4 you can continue 1.2 more miles to trailhead.
