Eagle Mountain Trail is a 3 1/2 mile hike to the top of Eagle Mountain, which at 2301 feet is the highest point in Minnesota. It is not a loop trail, and the round trip to the summit is 7 miles with a considerable climb. A good portion of this trail is within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, so the trail is maintained as a wilderness trail. This means that it is narrow with uneven footing caused by rocks and roots in the trail. Uphill segments do not have stairs. It is not cleared as frequently as a non-wilderness trail, and portions may be overgrown. You have the responsibility to be adequately prepared for a trip in the wilderness with good footwear, ample water, emergency supplies, and sufficient time to make the trip. You should be self sufficient: there is no cell phone coverage, and due to the nature of the trail, there is no easy way to get assistance in, nor any easy way to get people out in emergencies. If traveling into the Wilderness portion you will need a BWCAW Permit. Hiking for the day? Use a self-issue permit: instructions and the permit can be found at the trailhead kiosk. If camping overnight, see the Boundary Waters page for permit information and for reservations go to www.recreation.gov . From MN 61, turn north on County Road 4 (Caribou Trail) just north of Lutsen. Follow Co4 until it ends at FR170. Turn right on FR170 and proceed 3 1/2 miles to the Eagle Mountain Trailhead parking lot. The lot is on the left (north) side of the road.
