About this place

Pine Ranch is typical of the small, family-owned cattle operations that co-existed on the remote and isolated Arizona Strip from the last decades of the nineteenth century into the second half of the twentieth. The ranch is located in a pine forest on the Shivwits Plateau, a vast tableland in northwestern Arizona that stretches north from the rim of the Grand Canyon.Pine Ranch is located within the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, which is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service.Safety and ConditionsBefore you explore the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, take some time to really plan your visit. Make certain you are prepared with the proper equipment, maps and knowledge of the region.Conditions change seasonally and often suddenly. This is a beautiful but unforgiving landscape. You may encounter unexpected snowstorms, flash floods, lightning storms, impassable roads, extreme heat or cold, dried-up water sources, and high water from floods or runoff. You will need to plan for other potential hazards such as unmarked rugged roads and venomous animals.Bring plenty of water, food, extra gasoline, and at least two spare tires. Carry matches or a lighter, a signal mirror and foul weather gear.Road conditions vary based on weather conditions. We recommend high-clearance vehicles.Technology can make backcountry travel more comfortable, but be aware that cell phones, radios and GPS units may not work in many areas. Instead, make sure you have a detailed map to find your way.Call ahead before coming to the monument. Obtain a map at the interagency Public Lands Center in St. George, Utah. There is no first aid station on site. The nearest hospital is in St. George, Utah.Emergency ContactsFor emergencies: call 911Lake Mead National Recreation Area 24-hour emergency dispatch: 1-800-680-5851Mohave County Sheriff's Office: 928-753-0753
